2009 LB Poly Boys XC Team

Weekly Fall Newsletter #10

PAST WEEKS HIGHLIGHTS & COACHES THOUGHTS:

The regular season concluded last Thursday at our Moore League Championships at Heartwell Park.  Let me start off by saying how proud I am of this team & its dedication to the goal of Ň3Ó.   The athletes believed in the goal, worked their tails off toward the goal & nearly accomplished the goal!

The afternoon started w/ a very convincing win by the JV squad of Sergio Romero (JV Moore League Champion) & company.  The power of a very strong pack & a very dominant top five was never more evident as they went (1,4,5,6,7,10,11).  The win also secured the JV as league champions with a convincing 23-39 win over Wilson.  In light of the fact that the JV got cooked in their first two races, they really stepped it up to bring home the win!  I am very proud of these guys because the JV are often overlooked as the ŇotherÓ team.  Although some of the guys have been (& still are) in the varsity mix, most of these guys didnŐt run for a big trophy, they ran for pride & personal satisfaction...and they did it convincingly!

The Varsity was next off.   It was the battle of the day with the Moore League Trophy on the line.   Wilson has been knocking at the door all year long & were looking to be the spoilers.  At the first mile, it was still anyones race.  The Wilson crew were running well & Sean Graham from Lakewood was really pushing the pace. By mile two things were looking OK as a quick score put us up by two.  But two points is a single jersey swap so we really needed to close this one out to secure the team win.  Somewhere along Carson St., the Poly crew rallied & drove home a strong finish & ended up winning by eleven!  Sean & Christian passed several jerseys to close out in impressive form to finish 2-3 followed closely by Ruben & Eric w/ Vic in hot pursuit in the #5 spot.  Carl & Glenn also ran strong to round out our top 7.  The placings went 2 3 6 8 14 with a very nice spread of only 27 seconds.  It was the fastest team time at Moore League finals since 2002 & the first time any Moore League team has had 5 guys under 16 w/ a very impressive team time of 78.25 (15.41 avg.) It was a great day & a total team effort that kept the trophy at Poly.  Varsity also ended up undefeated in league!

The F/S  (last but not least) were the next off in a quest for their league title and to finish off the trifecta goal of Ň3Ó.   With Jazeel Garcia (F/S Moore League Champion) leading the charge, the F/S fought gallantly to try to win the title but came up just a bit short.    There were some very impressive times as you can see below but a strong & young Wislon squad was just a bit too deep.  This should be a great battle for years to come!

Overall it was a fantastic day for Poly runners & the Poly XC program.  One final note, your dedication to the sport & your team & your willingness to believe in your coaches is amazing. You all had a part in the success of our team.  I can speak for all the coaches in saying that we are very proud of every one of you runners & sincerely hope that your are proud of yourself, because you should be.
Your dedication, courage & sportsmanship is commendable.
