2009 LB Poly Boys XC Team
Weekly Fall Newsletter #2
PAST
WEEKS HIGHLIGHTS & COACHES THOUGHTS: What a great first week of real racing! The team kicked off the real racing
season competing at two separate venues, the travel team at Las Vegas Invite
& all the other athletes at Cerritos Great Cow Run.
The Great Cow Run
Congratulations
to everyone who raced at this yearÕs Great Cow run. Under fairly sloppy (muddy)
race conditions the Poly boys ran to some fantastic performances. The first
race of the day, Boys Frosh, placed 7th w/ Bryce King leading the
way in 13th and a PR of 18:02. An hour later the Boys Soph also
raced to a 7th place finish led by Raul Vasquez in 33rd place w/
17.44(lifetime PR). Leading the
way for the JV team 2 hours later was Kenny Holstad placing 22rd with a lifetime PR of over 45
seconds w/ a 17.43 & our fastest time of the day! These were just a few of the highlights of some great
races See Results Below.
Las Vegas Invites
Under
expected brutal heat and a challenging course, the varsity & JV boys ended
up w/ some solid but mixed results in the season opener at the 39th
Annual Las Vegas Invites. Varsity
was looking for a top finish and although we had some good individual runs, the
team as a whole did not race up the their potential and ended up 7th. This lower than expected finish should
be used as Òfuel for the fireÓ for next weeks Woodbridge meet. We finished the day (97 degrees at race
time) w/ the JV runners blowing the doors off the competition for the team win
with an awesome 12457 finish w/ Sergio leading the way to an individual overall
victory! See Results Below.
Every
single performance, good or not so good, should be analyses by each individual
athlete ultimately asking, Òhow can I improveÓ? We learn something from every single race so what did you
learn last Saturday and how can you apply that to make you go faster this Saturday?
Keep in mind that all these great performances came off a very
difficult week of training with no cutting back and with only a few interval
sessions Òin the bankÓ &
everyone racing in trainers!
We have barely begun to tap into your speed, you are running off of
strength training right now, and you all are going to get faster if you
continue to work very hard & stick to the training plan.
Keep
in mind that this was a training race.
In other sports they call it Òpre-seasonÓ. You try your best, run very hard and tweak your racing
strategy for next time. But we
train & learn through these early season races. No racing flats, no cutting back...yet! Stick with the long term plan. Have faith in the program &
training.
One
last very important question as I know you are all scouting out your Moore
League competitors, would you rather be racing your best now, or at the end of
your season? Trust the training
program, work your tail off during practice & let it all out there on race
day. YouÕll seeÉ

*XC Racing
Flats: If you are interested in purchasing XC racers for
the season, I suggest doing it ASAP.
Woodbridge would be a great course for them but you must try them out in
practice first. If you are going
to get them, it is not mandatory, I suggest going to Runners High as their
highly qualified staff will get the correct shoe for you.
*Thanks: Thanks
again to all the parents who were able to help out this last week with the team
dinner, gear distribution and the never ending chore of driving the athletes
around to school & meets. And
a special thanks to everyone who was able to come out to support and cheer for
the athletes at the meets!

track.
