2009 LB Poly Boys XC Team Weekly Fall
Newsletter #5
PAST WEEKS HIGHLIGHTS & COACHES THOUGHTS:
It was another scorcher of a day for Moore League Dual
Meet #1 at El Dorado. The JV race, as usual, led off the day under the hottest
conditions. A stacked Wilson
JV squad just couldnÕt be broken
by our top end of Saul, Kenny & Bryan. An uncharacteristic
less than their best Poly squad was just not enough for the JVers to
overcome. It was a valuable less
in that we cannot take races for granted, we still have to RACE them! Hopefully we can use this as motivation
to have some great training & a great race in Signal Hill.
The Varsity had another epic battle w/ Wilson that simply
came down to a matter executing a game plan. Our race plan was to take care of business. Go out strong & controlled & do
what we need to do for the win.
Wilson went out way fast but our guys kept their cool through the mile &
really put down the hammer on the 2nd lap for a very convincing
win. Sean Òwhere is the other
slower twin?Ó Price blew away the field for an impressive 15.16 win. He was followed by a very nice pack of
green w/ Chris Penn, Vic, Ruben & Jazeel who came in 3457. Rounding our varsity was Glen &
Dillon w/ very solid runs while battling it out w/ Wislons # 5, 6 & 7! This was the fastest team time that we
have run at El Dorado in years and we also had a very respectable spread of 51
seconds.
The F/S finished of the day w/ a close contest against
Wilson. With Fernado & Raul
leading the chase of WilsonÕs front runners, we came up just a few JerseyÕs
short. Colin, Sean & Cameron
rounded out the scoring all coming very close to breaking WilsonÕs 345 pack.
COACHES THOUGHTS:
You
all need to keep this Jersey thing in mind while you run. Every jersey is
critical & you can never give up!
Overall we had a mixed day w/ some
good individual efforts but JV & F/S lacked the usual Poly team effort,
spirit & pride. We need to take what we learned from El Dorado, good or
bad, and use it in a positive way as motivation to make our team better. We have to stick to our plan
& train toward our year ending goals!
The other teams are not going to give us anything, we need to earn it!
All levels at Moore League #2 are setting up to be great races. We need
to be ready & we need to run strong, healthy & confident. It is going
to be a battle on the hill, and as Charles Darwin put it...Ósurvival of the fittestÓ!
ADDITIONAL PAST WEEKS HIGHLIGHTS:
Warren invitesÉWOW! Another fast course w/ some great
individual results. Much better
efforts as I saw our athletes racing!
Loads of PRÕs which is even more impressive as we ran El Dorado LESS
than 2 days prior! Nice job
athletes! But again, donÕt settle
on your time. Use this as the new
bar to motivate your training sessions & strive for excellence & newer
goals.
ADDITIONAL COACHES THOUGHTS:
Now that we are past the mid season grind, the miles &
longer workouts have piled up in your legs, you need to take extra care of
yourself. You should be stretching every night & drinking lots of
water. Eating as healthy as
possible and trying to get some extra sleep...preferably not in class. Watch out for early signs of sickness
& injury and try to nip them in the bud. Ice any little ach or pain. Ice baths are also a great idea at least once per week. All the little things do add up &
do make a difference.
Now is also a good time to refocus your league & season ending goals. You have a feel for what
you can do now which should help you set realistic goals. Remember, goals are
what keep you going. Set a few more short term ones for the next few weeks
& readjust your long term season ending goals. What you do now in workout is crucial to how you will
perform at the end. League #2 & Finals will be here before you know
it!

League Cluster Meet #2:
Long
Beach Poly will be hosting the second Moore League Cluster meet of the season on Thursday,
Oct. 15th, at Discovery
Well Park in Signal Hill. The meet will begin at 3:00 p.m. and will conclude at about 6:30
p.m. Since we are
hosting this meet, all athletes are expected to remain at the site until the
course and park are picked up. Our bus will leave from 15th Street by the Science Building
at 2:00 p.m. sharp.
Athletes are encouraged to wear their warm-ups and uniforms to school, to avoid
dressing after 5th period. There is no return bus from the meet, so athletes
must arrange rides home from Signal Hill. Order of Events (approximately every
30 minutes starting at 3:00 p.m.): JV Boys, JV Girls, Varsity Boys, Varsity
Girls, FS Boys, FS Girls.
*Help!
Help! Help! We
are hosting this meet & will
need reliable assistance for this meet. All parents and guardians who can help
from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. or a half shift for part of that time are urged to
do so. Areas that we need help include:
**Course monitors (bring a comfy chair, a
book/magazine, and sun protectionÉyour job is to make sure runners run in the
right direction)
**Finish line help (bring comfortable
shoes, you will be standingÉyour job is to help make sure that as runners cross
the finish line they continue moving towards the computer tentÉyou will also
make sure tags are taken from each finisher)
**Race set-up (this is mostly for folks
who can meet us at the park at 12:00 noon to help us set up the finish line
chute and mark the course).
**Team area support
(your job will be to help set up the team tents and tarps)
Please e-mail Me or
Coach Nate if you are available! Once again thanks because we could not do what
we do without your help & support. All athletes are expected to
remain until the conclusion of the meet to help with cleaning up the area.
Poly runners should plan on being picked up by parents/guardians from the
site at 6:30 p.m.
*Athlete of the week (Last Week): Fernando Bogarin & Jaime
Grabinski! Check the website for
details on their accomplishments.
Will it be you next week?
