2009 LB Poly Boys XC Team

Weekly Fall Newsletter #6

PAST WEEKS HIGHLIGHTS & COACHES THOUGHTS:

The boys xc team headed north again this year to Santa Barbara to the Dos Pueblos XC Invitational. It was an outstanding day for the jackrabbit runners as the boys not only won the Overall Sweepstakes Trophies for an unbelievable 6th year in a row, but they also won two of the four levels & were 2nd in another! Jazeel (2nd overall), Raul & Fernando were our scorers in the 10th grade race.   Ruben (2nd overall), Christain (3rd overall) & Sergio had our best score of the day placing 1st  w/ only 12 points. Sean, Victor & ÒComebackÓ Carl   brought home the 12th grade title. There were many very fine runs on a slow, ÒsoftÓ course.  It  was a real TEAM effort that brought home the Sweeps Award.
After the meet, we were taken care of again by an old running friend of mine.  Jesse Leyva, the principal at Los Olivos School, opened up the Gym for us to sleep in, and he also arranged a catered dinner at the gym & the best breakfast burritos on earth at his house.  Year after year he continues to be amazed by what a great bunch of student / athletes you all are & he reiterated what a pleasure it was to host you.  Please read his posted note to all of you on the website.  A special thanks to him from you would be appreciated. See below.

Thursday is Moore League #2 and (like Dos Pueblos) donÕt look for many lifetime PRÕs on this course. Throw the times out the window becauseÉIT IS JERSEY TIME AGAIN!!!  EVERY JERSEY COUNTS!!! You need to go out very hard & very strong but still controlled. The first 400 is a bad place to go into oxygen debt. Work each uphill through the peak (NOT TO THE PEAK) & let loose on the downhills! Each loop should be faster (THAT DOESNÕT MEAN CRUISE THE FIRST LOOP). And finish the race with all youÕve got. Do not leave anything in the tank, leave it all out on the course. Run strong, hard and run with pride & confidence like I know you can & like we have trained! Stick to this race plan & you & your team should have a great day!

*Moore League Cluster Meet #2:

Long Beach Poly will be hosting the second Moore League Cluster meet of the season on Thursday, Oct. 16th, at Discovery Well Park in Signal Hill. The meet will begin at 3:00 p.m. and will conclude at about 6:30 p.m. Since we are hosting this meet, all athletes are expected to remain at the site until the course and park are picked up. Our bus will leave from 15th Street by the Science Building at 2:00 p.m. sharp. Athletes are encouraged to wear their warm-ups and uniforms to school, to avoid dressing after 5th period. There is no return bus from the meet, so athletes must arrange rides home from Signal Hill. Order of Events (approximately every 30 minutes starting at 3:00 p.m.): JV Boys, JV Girls, Varsity Boys, Varsity Girls, FS Boys, FS Girls.

*Help! Help! Help! We are hosting this meet  & will need reliable assistance for this meet. All parents and guardians who can help from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. or a half shift for part of that time are urged to do so.  There is also set up before the meet so if you can arrive early, help set up & then enjoy the meet!  Please e-mail Me or Coach Nate if you are available! Once again thanks because we could not do what we do without your help & support.  All athletes are expected to remain until the conclusion of the meet to help with cleaning up the area.  Poly runners should plan on being picked up by parents/guardians from the site at 6:30 p.m.

*Mt. SAC Change: Due to the massively overloaded staff on race day at Mt. SAC, the race committee (w/out consulting any of us coaches) has decided to drop the JV division from the race.  A few very limited JV teams will get to compete only if the varsity team makes it into the Team Sweeps race.  I totally disagree w/ the decision but there is nothing we can do abut it at this point.  I know our JV runners work very hard & deserve to run at SAC but it is out of my hands.  In an attempt to keep the JV runners on the same training/racing page as the rest of the team, Coach Nate & I are looking for a road race for the JVerÕs to participate in on the same weekend.  Details to be announced soon.

Also, the race orgainzers are going to be very strict about cutting off slower runners at the 1 mile mark & have advised us to use more discretion as to who we allow to race.  With that in mind, we will not be taking any runners who have not broken 22 minutes.

*Mt. SAC Practice: All team members (as long as we have enough drivers) are invited & encouraged to attend our annual Mt. SAC Preview Practice on Saturday Oct. 17th. This is a great workout & will give all athletes a preview to the Mt. SAC Invitational the following week. We will need parents to drive our athletes. Parents, it is a great place to run w/ us or hike or walk! We will meet at our usual Sat. morning meeting spot in the parking lot next to the Town Center Starbucks at 6:30am. Your other option is to meet us at Mt. SAC in the parking lot next to the ÒairstripÓ at 7:30am.

*Athlete of the week (Last Week):  Caleb Stahl, Saul Mora, Chris Penn & Victor Espinosa!  Check the website for details on their fine accomplishments.  Will it be you next week?
