2009 LB Poly Boys XC Team

Fall Post Season Newsletter

Varsity Recap:

The season concluded for the Poly Boys Varsity runners at the Southern Section CIF Finals on the Mt. SAC course last Saturday. Poly runners had a solid day of competition against not only some of the best teams in the state, but some national ranked teams.   The team effort was highlighted by 3 PRÕs , a very good team time and the tightest D1 spread of the day at only 33 seconds.

The race began w/ the usual two fast valley loops (very fast for Christian) w/ most of our pack coming through at 4.55 to 5.07.  Chris feeling a bit too good took it out in a blisteing (& suicidal) 4.42!  Ruben, Sean, Eric, Jazeel & Vic were all in the mix & Glenn came through at a very fast 5.07.   While Chris was hanging on for dear life, our pack pushed hard through the switchbacks & up & over poop out.   At mile two, is was still Chris in 10.39 w/ Sean starting to really move in 10.46.   All the runners were pushing through no mans land & up reservoir continually perusing jerseys & pressing hard to the finish.  At the line, we ended up 12th.  We need at least 7th to advance.

Did we reach our goal of Ò7Ó?  No.  Did we make it to State?  Nope!  Pretty tough competition when 7 of the top 10 D1 ranked teams in the state were in our heat and some of them didnÕt even make it in!  Did we have our best race as team?  Probably not.  Did we back down from the challenge?  No way!  Did we try our best?  I definitely think so as I think every guy gave 100% of whatever his best was for the day.  Part of setting goals high is to work your tail off to strive for them.  If you set your goals low, there is no real reward in achieving them.  We set our goal of Ò7Ó  high & that is an extremely challenging goal but we did our very best to strive for it.   We came up a bit short but the entire team should all be very proud of the effort, the journey & the final result.

Also & most important, donÕt judge your entire season but just one race.  Even when we were not at full force, Varsity was undefeated in league, ran the fastest team time of any Moore League Team in a Moore League Race on ALL three courses and ran the fastest team time at SAC since 2002.  As a whole, we had another fantastic year of xc in 2009!

In conclusion, the future still look very promising for the Poly XC program.  We had some great senior leadership this year that will be handed down to the juniors (Seniors to be next year).   We also return a very experience varsity team with dedication, talented & determined.  6 of the 9 members of our CIF team return nest year!  We will be back, we will be stronger & we will continue to excel in the pursuit to be our best!  Already thinking about next year???  GoodÉme too & I see no reason to change our lofty goals for next year Ó3-7Ó!!!

Congrates to all the runners of the 2009 Poly Boys XC Team.

All Other Runners:

Hope everyone is rested, recovered & ready to go!  As we ease back into a steady running routine, make sure that you realize a couple of things.  First that if you want to be a successful xc runner, you have to approach track as a way of becoming a better xc runner.  It is not just idle time between when xc ends & summer xc training begins.  Take advantage of the opportunity to excel in track & it will pay off more that you can imagine when xc rolls around again.  The second item is that you need to realize that from  training standpoint, December training time is for track what June training is for xc.  So now is the time to develop consistent training habits.  The xc & track team is supposed to be composed of runners so that makes it real simpleÉwe are runners & we runÉCONSISTANTLY & YEAR ROUND!

Just a few reminders about some upcoming items.
